Daddy's Home 2
This comedic sequel features returning cast Will Ferrell as Brad, Linda Cardellini as Sara, Brad's wife, and Mark Wahlberg as Dusty, Sara's ex-husband. Brad and Dusty have become much friendlier to each other and decide that this Christmas will be together as one family. What they hadn't planned on was grandfathers.
Brad and Dusty arrive at the airport to pick up their dads. Dusty's dad is a man's man and Dusty is worried about how his father will react to his new friendship with Brad. The differences between their fathers is immediately apparent when his dad, Kurt, who is played by Mel Gibson, arrives. Brad's dad, Don, who is played by John Lithgow, is outwardly loving and the opposite of Kurt.
Kurt decides to rent a house for the two families to use for Christmas as one happy bunch. This will be a great Christmas, or will it?
This sequel is just as good as the first. There are some really funny scenes that will have you rolling. Mel Gibson and John Lithgow were the perfect actors for their roles and a great addition. John Cena again has a small role and is an excellent bully. Go see this and bring your family. I gave it 3 out of 4 stars.
Happy Death Day
Jessica Rothe plays Tree Gelbman, who believes that the world is suppose to wait on her. After a wild night of partying, she wakes up in the dorm room of her classmate, Carter, who is played by Israel Broussard. It's her birthday. As Tree is headed to a party that night, she is murdered by someone wearing the mask of her school's mascot.
Somehow she wakes up the next day again in Carter's dorm room. As she leaves, she realizes that everything is the same as the day before. She decides to stay at her sorority house to avoid a repeat of her murder, but is still killed by the masked attacker. When the same thing happens the next day, she decides to stay in her room. Still the masked intruder is able to kill her. Tree realizes that the day is just repeating in a time loop. She tells Carter her story and he convinces her to use the day to discover the identity of her killer.
Happy Death Day is a solid movie. It was well written, well directed, and well acted. It's similar to some movies, but it has a twist. Jessica Rothe was outstanding as were the other actors. Check you mind at the door and I think you'll enjoy this movie as I did. I gave this movie 3 out of 4 stars. It's a fun horror movie.
This Marvel movie again features Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Tom Hiddleston as his brother, Loki. Thor escapes the fire demon, Surthur, after finding that his father, Odin, is no longer at his home on Asgard. He finds that Loki has sent their father to Earth and Loki has been pretending to be Odin. Thor and Loki go to Norway to find their father who informs them that he is dying. Before he dies, he warns Thor to beware of their sister, Hela. Odin had feared that Hela was too dangerous and had locked her away. With Odin now dead, Hela, who is played by Cate Blanchett, is free to continue her destruction of the world.
After crash landing, Thor is captured by a bounty hunter known as Scrapper 142. She sells Thor to the Grandmaster, who is played by Jeff Goldblum. The Grandmaster forces Thor to fight Hulk, who is played by Mark Ruffalo. When Thor learns that Scrapper 142 is a former Valkyrie fighter from Asgard, he convinces her to help him and Hulk escape to save the world from Hela.
This movie was directed by Taika Waititi and he did a fine job. The movie had some great comedy and some well done action scenes. Seeing this in 3D is eye opening to how really good the special effects are. They are deserving of an Oscar nomination.
The movie is well written and well acted. Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Mark Ruffalo, Jeff Goldblum, and Cate Blanchett were all terrific. Again this is a movie that whole family can see. You don't have to see it in 3D to enjoy. I gave this movie 3 1/2 out of 4 stars.
A Bad Mom's Christmas
Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn reprise their roles as moms Amy, Kiki, and Carla. The ladies have high hopes for this Christmas but when their moms arrive, all plans are changed. Amy's mother, Ruth, who is played by Christine Baranski, expects a show with everything done with extravagance. Kiki's mother, Sandy, who is played by Cheryl Hines, announces that she has purchased the house next door so she can be with her daughter at all times. Carla's mother, Isis, who is played by Susan Sarandon, is more of a mess than Carla is. The younger moms must take back Christmas.
I thougth this movie was very funny at times. The acting was really good with a great cast but the script was just OK. There just wasn't enough for the actors to work with. I'm only giving this movie 2 1/2 out of 4 stars. Wait for it at the cheap theater or on blue ray or DVD.
Thank You For Your Service
This movie shows the struggles our service men and women go through when returning home from war. Miles Teller plays the part of young Staff Sergeant Adam Schumann whose job in Iraq was to spot IUD's before the troops unwittingly did. He was considered a hero by his brothers in arms but he felt he was anything but. When he and his squad return home to Kansas, life is not the same. Sounds, dreams, certain words, all strike fear in these brave soldiers.
Haley Bennett plays Adam's wife who tries to support him any way she can. Beulah Koale plays Adam's buddy, Specialist Tausolo Aieti whose fighting his own demons. And Joe Cole plays the other friend, Billy Waller, who returns home to find his fiance has left.
This very real story based on truth is well worth seeing. I really enjoyed it. It's emotional and telling. War is cruel even after the fact. This movie was well written, well acted, and well directed. Amy Schumer has a small part that is much different than her norm and she did really well. I gave this movie 3 1/2 out of 4 stars. Thank you to our veterans for their service!
Only the Brave
This movie is based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots. These brave men were firefighters who put their lives on the line to save whole towns and people from wild fires. Josh Brolin plays Eric Marsh who is the crew leader. His wife, Amanda. who is played by Jennifer Connelly, is very supportive but worries every time he goes out.
Miles Teller plays Brendan, who is a young punk at the beginning of the show. After learning that he is a new dad, he sets out to better himself and stop his drug habits. He convinces Eric to give him a chance. Eric believes in his team who are only allowed to help on the peripheral. He convinces Duane, who is played by Jeff Bridges, to help them get certified to become hotshots so they can really get involved. All the guys love it, but the families are left behind to cope.
This movie is fantastic and gives a glimpse into the lives of the firefighters. Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin, and Miles Teller were well prepared to play their parts. Firefighters were involved in making this movie and it shows. It was well acted and well directed and just really good to watch. I gave this movie 3 1/2 out of 4 stars.
